Our History

Athens is an interesting place. It is a wonderful community full of generous people and an engaging culture. Athens can also be very isolating for new parents. Whether you come here to pursue an education or a profession, odds are that you left your cultural and familial community behind.

We have all heard the expression “it takes a village”. It takes a village to raise our children. It takes a village to raise ourselves. Once we enter our childbearing years, we need a community more than ever to help us find support, educational services, activities and friends. Historically, our community would include extended family and lifelong friends, but in today’s world it is considered “normal” to be separated from our families and cultural communities by many, many miles.

Back in 2004, Alexa Clay started this community in an effort to help Athens’ parents form a modern day village. To connect the growing group of parents she met as a doula and childbirth educator, she started “Athens Conscious Parents.” The group began as a phone tree and soon after moved to a yahoo group. There were meetings, potlucks, play dates, movies and workshops here and there. She sometimes dreamed of bigger things: a space, a resource center, an actual website…

Things change, and babies grow up, and in 2011 Alexa and her kids moved to Nashville, Tennessee where she is focused inward on raising her boys and becoming a midwife. Long time ACP member, Kate Hodges, came on board to help co-moderate the growing yahoo group.

Kate shares Alexa’s conviction that community is vital for healthy, happy families. She created Bloom as community classroom space for Athens area families and friends to be educated, inspired and nurtured. In spring of 2013, Alexa and Kate revisited the dream of growing Athens Conscious Parents into something bigger and realized that merging ACP and Bloom was the next step. To grow this wonderful and supportive online community, we needed a physical space where members could meet and interact. Alexa and Kate transitioned our online community to a Facebook group and opened the doors of Bloom as the home of our community in May of 2013. We look forward to Bloom and Athens Conscious Parent growing together.
